Once you have upgraded to Thesis 2.1 and above, your site would automatically be mobile responsive. That means your site would display optimally on all devices including mobile devices and tablets.
In that case, what’s stopping you to upgrade?
However, many long time users of Thesis wordpress theme (myself included) were first reluctant to upgrade even though the theme is mobile responsive. Many were reluctant to update because:
- Thesis openhook was not working with upgraded version of Thesis
- Do not understand the concept introduced in the later versions of Thesis
- May lose customization with the upgrade.
Once you upgraded and figured out the Thesis canvas, you would not need to use the openhook function anymore.

The new concept of drag and drop:
It is a learning curve but once you figured out the drag and drop function in Thesis canvas, you would absolutely love it. There are those who used other Themes of the drag and drop function and when they change the theme, their site actually broke (view an excellent article to illustrate the point).
Initially when I could not figure out how the Thesis version 2.1 worked after I upgraded, I tried to change to another Theme- my site were intact but of course I lost the customization that I had done with my older version of Thesis.
Customization lost after upgrade
If you switch from Thesis WordPress theme version 1.85 and below directly to version 2.1 and above, it would be likely you would use the customizations that you have done. For one thing, I find that some of the settings for example my ads which I planted the code in Openhook failed to show up in the new version.
Also, you would need to reconfigure the contents in your sidebar as you would be greeted with an empty sidebar. However, this is common whenever you switch themes.
For my sites, I have upgraded from thesis version 2.1, then to 2.3, 2.4 and now vesion 2.6 …..and all my custom pages and sidebars remained intact with all the versions.
However, should you switch skins, for example between Thesis Classic Responsive to Pearsonified skin, then the site customizations that you do would not be reflected in the new Theme and you would need to reconfigure them.
